Youth Construction Academies

Youth Construction Academies offer hands-on training and classroom instruction preparing high school age youth for entry level jobs in the construction industry and to help them be more successful when applying for a trade apprenticeship positions. Academies start with local school districts, vocational educators and local employers committed to forming a path for young Alaskans from school to work in construction. They serve in-school and out of school youth, ranging from 17 to 24 years old.

Our Youth Academies offer students and young Alaskans a pathway and opportunity to see if they really want to pursue a career in construction. Students attend a two-three week intensive training session that increase basic academic skills in math and technical reading, and basic work skills for entry level jobs as carpenters, truck drivers or heavy equipment operators, for example.

Alaska Works started offering Youth Construction Academies in 2004 at St. Mary’s in partnership with the Lower Yukon School District, Yukon Delta Fisheries Development Authority, regional construction employers and the Denali commission. Today AWP works with ten school districts to offer academies. To learn more about Construction Academies read our booklet.

Alaska Works Partnership, Inc.’s Construction Academies offers basic skills training for adults, 18 and older. Classes are at night and on weekends. Academy classes give students classroom and hands-on training, which may be a first step in a path toward a successful career in construction.

The Anchorage Construction Academy trained over 100 adults in its initial effort in early 2007. Courses included basic carpentry, plumbing, electricity, drywall finishing, stick welding, construction trades math, health and safety and other certification courses. A majority of our graduates either entered apprenticeship schools for further training or went directly to work on construction-related jobs

The application period for spring classes has ended. The schedule for fall classes will be announced at a later date. Check this site for future updates or contact to request an email notification of future classes.
